Students and teachers from Calgary Christian School will hold the third annual Marit Cup Tuesday, a friendly hockey game that celebrates the legacy of a former student.
Named for Marit McKenzie, who attended and graduated from Calgary Christian, the student-versus-teacher hockey game raises money for the David Foster Foundation, Right to Play and a Calgary Christian scholarship for students pursuing education in the arts.
McKenzie died suddenly in January 2013 as a result of a pulmonary embolism. She had focused her senior project on the David Foster Foundation, which assists Canadian families with children in need of organ transplants. She left a lasting legacy by donating her organs. She was a talented artist, prompting the school to create an arts scholarship in her name.
The Marit Cup will be played from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Tuesday at the Markin MacPhail Arena in Calgary.
Marit’s parents, Bruce and Susan McKenzie; Allison Jones, a board member with the David Foster Foundation; and five-year-old Curtis Kellar, who received a heart transplant in September 2014, will be among the event’s special guests.
In the last two years, the Marit Cup has raised about $28,000 for the David Foster Foundation and a scholarship in McKenzie’s memory.
