We are thrilled to announce that Anaya C., a student in Palliser School Division, has been selected to serve on the Alberta Minister's Youth Council. The Youth Council, led by Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, provides a platform for 40 students from across Alberta to share their perspectives on the province’s education system. Council members represent diverse communities, experiences, and schools and collaborate to discuss current issues and provide input on policies that affect students across Alberta.
Anaya’s journey to the council began when her mother shared the invitation to apply. “Once my mom shared the opportunity with me, I read what was involved, and I was excited to apply and see how I could have a voice and impact in the education system in Alberta,” said Anaya. Her enthusiasm and commitment to education reflect her passion for making a difference, particularly for rural students like herself.
One of Anaya’s key focus areas during her time on the council will be addressing the unique challenges faced by rural schools. "I want to see rural schools have more options for non-academic focus to better prepare students following careers that don’t require university," she shared. Anaya highlights the limited course options and the heavy reliance on online learning as significant hurdles for rural students. She hopes to explore innovative ways to deliver more diverse courses to rural schools.
Beyond her goals for rural education, Anaya is excited to gain new insights into the world of politics and Alberta’s education system. "I am excited to learn more about politics, Alberta Education, and meet students from all over the province. It should be a challenging and motivating experience," she added.
The Alberta Minister’s Youth Council is a prestigious opportunity for students to engage directly with the province's education leadership, and we are incredibly proud of Anaya C.’s achievement. We look forward to seeing the positive impact she will make on behalf of rural students and the entire Palliser community.
Congratulations, Anaya!
